Ingredients
For balls
½ cup chana dal – Soak for about 1-2 hour
1 can jackfruit or about 1 cup fresh
½ tsp cumin seed
4-5 whole black peppers
½ inch cinnamon stick
2-3 cardamom pods
⅓ tsp hing
For gravy
2 tomatoes – ground
1 medium sized onion – ground
2 green chillies – finely chopped
1 tsp garlic – ground
1 tsp ginger – ground
1 tsp red chilly powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp coriander leaves for garnish
Oil for frying
Salt to taste
Directions
- For ball
- Put a pressure cooker or fry pan on the stove. Add 2 tsp oil. Then add cumin seed, hing, black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, jackfruit, and chana dal. Mix and add 2-3 tbsp water and salt. Wait until you hear a whistle, and open the cooker; the dal should be tender. Make sure it’s not burned but still dry.
- Now, grind the dal. Make a ball (golf ball sized). If it is too watery, add chickpea flour.
- Then fry all balls golden brown and keep aside.
- For gravy
- Put a pan on the gas. Add 2 tsp oil then wait 30 seconds. Add onion and stir at medium heat for about 3-5 minutes. Now add tomatoes, ginger, garlic, and green chilly. Mix and keep on the gas for about 3-5 minutes. Now add turmeric powder, red chilly powder, coriander powder, salt, and 2 cups water and wait 2-3 minutes or until gravy is boiling.
- Now, add the balls and cover the lid for 3-4 minutes.
- Ready to serve!
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with rice and chapati.
