minutesThis No-Fry Steamed Dahi Dal Delight is a modern, healthier twist on traditional dahi vada. Instead of deep frying, the urad dal batter is steamed to perfection, creating a light and fluffy texture. Layered with creamy yogurt and tangy chutneys, it delivers all the flavor without the heaviness. A perfect dish for gatherings, festive meals, or healthy snacking.
Ingredients
1 cup urad dal (split black gram, skinless)
½ inch ginger
2–3 green chilies
½ onion
Salt to taste
½ tsp hing (asafoetida)
1 small packet Eno (fruit salt)
For Topping
2–3 cups dahi (yogurt), whisked smooth
Tamarind chutney (imli chutney)
Green chutney (cilantro & mint)
Boondi
Roasted cumin seeds, crushed
Fresh pomegranate seeds (anar dana)
Salt and pepper (or chaat masala)
Red chili powder (optional)
Directions
- Wash the urad dal 4–5 times.
- Soak it for 5–6 hours.
- Drain and blend with ginger, green chilies, and onion until smooth (use very little water).
- Transfer the mixture to a bowl.
- Whisk the batter using an electric mixer or by hand for about 5 minutes, until light and fluffy.
- Tip: Proper mixing is very important for a soft and fluffy cake.
- Prepare your steamer and grease a steaming pan.
- Add salt, hing, and Eno to the batter. Mix gently.
- Steam for about 20 minutes.
- Insert a knife — if it comes out clean, the cake is ready.
- Let it cool for 5 minutes before removing.
- Once completely cool, slice into layers or pieces.
- Take a bowl and spread ½ cup whisked yogurt.
- Place one piece of the steamed cake.
- Spread more yogurt and drizzle tamarind and green chutney.
- Add another cake piece and spread more yogurt on top.
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
- Final Topping:
- Remove from the fridge and transfer to a serving plate.
- Spread yogurt on top and sides.Drizzle tamarind and green with boondi.
